Like winemaking,
winery design is a careful blend of art, science and economics. We
believe that the architect must understand the winemaking philosophy as
well as the opportunities inherent in translating this philosophy into
physical form. Similar to the concept of “terroir” the unique
sense of place inherent to each site is central to our approach.
We seek to design buildings of lasting quality that truly fit each
client’s individual requirements and unique environment. In the course
of our research on winery design, we have visited over 100 wineries
throughout the United States, Canada, France, Italy, Spain and New
Zealand talking with winemakers about specific challenges and unique
solutions. Our commitment to principles of sustainable
development and energy efficient design provides our clients an
opportunity to enhance their reputation as good stewards of the land.
We strive not only to bring the project in on time and within the
budget, but to develop the optimal design solution, a synthesis where
the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts.
The firm’s projects have ranged in scale from “boutique” wineries to
160,000 case production facilities.
We are pleased to offer our clients the following services: site evaluation; master planning; feasibility studies for new or existing facilities; historic restoration of structures and gardens, and permitting assistance. With expertise in both architecture and landscape design Laurence Ferar & Associates offers a unique understanding of the complex issues involved in creating winery buildings that function well over time and truly fit their surroundings. We invite your inquiries - for small or large projects. We not only have the skill to carry out the most demanding assignments, we share your enthusiasm for winemaking success.
